New Year New Job!!!

Now that all the Christmas cheer is over and a new year is starting it is the perfect time to capture your New Year motivation and direct it towards reaching some of those goals for 2012.

If one of your goals is to shake up your working life then the first place is start is to refresh your resume. Idealistically your resume should be updated every 6 months, although realistically most people scramble to update their resume 10 minutes before the job application is due. There is nothing wrong with this method, although chances are you might miss some important details and there is a higher chance of mistakes.
Taking the time to regularly update your resumes means it is a lot easier to do the 10 minute scrabble for when the job application is actually due, and you can be confident that your formatting, style and themes are correct. If your resume is set up correctly updating your information as required should be relatively easy and as simple as data entry and a quick style theme and proof read.

Don't underestimate the value of your resume - think of it as your first impression with a potential employer. You want it to appear professional, comprehensive and personal. When reviewing your resumes there are a few quick guidelines to follow:

1. Limit your resume to 3 pages if possible. Your resume is meant to be a summary, to attract interest and help you progress to the next stage where they can discuss your resume further. It is not meant to cover every duty or responsbility you have had.

2. Font and spacing are important. If a resume is too hard to read, chances are it won’t be read if there are multiple applicants. There is no need to go overboard and make it size 14 font with double spaces, just be considerate of the reader and make sure the font is basic and there is definition between sections.

3. Bullet Points are ok! When detailing information sometimes its best to be concise and to the point. There is no need to create a sentence, just for the sake of it. If you can convey the information accurately don't waste space or time creating sentences. Most times a resume is scanned with the reader looking for key words - use key words to get your message across.
